Here's a small Excerpt:
Three men got out of the car, but it was the man who last
exited who immediately drew her attention.
He wore a long coat, even though it was warm out, and he, too, wore a black
homburg on his head. He had white spats snapped
over his shoes and when he turned to look at her, she noticed three deep scars
running down his cheek. Having seen
posters in the post office for the FBI’s most dangerous criminal list, she was
shocked when she realized that the famous Al Capone, also known as Scarface,
was standing in front of her. Ruby
wanted to run inside, but if she did, she would miss speaking with Salvatore.
Salvatore’s boss said something to him, and as he gestured
toward Ruby, he chuckled the way all men did when they looked at her now. Ruby could see Salvatore’s face color, he
nodded, and then he walked directly toward her.
When he approached the porch, he tipped his hat, and said, “Good
afternoon, miss. I’m Salvatore
D’Angelo. I believe we met a while back,
but I never got your name.”
“I’m – my name is Ruby.
Ruby Shaeffer. My Pa owns this
place.”
He smiled that flirtatious way he had, with his white teeth
and teasing eyes; it seemed to Ruby that the birds were singing just for her. “I see.
Well, my boss over there needs to have a meeting with your father, but
first he would like to know if he can have some water.”
“Sure, of course.
I’ll get a pitcher and bring it right out.” Ruby knew by the heat she felt rising on her
face that she was blushing, but she managed to give him a small smile in
return. It was then that her father came
out of the garage. He quickly walked
over and invited Mr. Capone to sit on the porch. Ivy excused herself, and went inside for some
cold water. When she returned the men
were seated at the table, and as she poured the water, she was aware of Mr.
Capone’s eyes following her. He chuckled,
and said, “Ya gonna let this one get away, Salvatore? Go on.
We don’t need ya here.”
“Yes, sir. I won’t be
long.”
“I’m sure you won’t.”
The men laughed raucously, and Ruby was surprised and humiliated to see
her father join in.
