Two Great Christmas Novellas

By the looks of it, even though Thanksgiving has not yet arrived, you're getting in the mood for Christmas -- or at least stories about Christmas. When Hallmark movies begin to run on TV, they always help boost sales of my Christmas books, So just in case you haven't read these yet, here are the links. Pinecones and Promises is a standalone book. A Kindred Christmas actually follows The White Pine Trilogy, but it can be read on its own also, although you would miss references to certain people. I listed it as 3.5 in the Trilogy.
If you like feel good books that help will you get in the spirit, try these two out.

New Release - The Golden Crystal

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT! The Golden Crystal, which could previously only be read on Vella, is now available on both paperback and Kindle. If you liked The Unforgettables, you will love this newest addition, Book 6, of the series. If you haven't read this series, I recommend starting with Book 1, Ruby and Sal.

In this book you will go back in time to a young gypsy named Gina, and as you read along, the background of who she is and how she connects to the families in this series is slowly revealed. I hope you love this new Gina like I do, because more books are already being planned. Once I started writing about this captivating and magical person, I couldn't let her go.
For fans of A Slip in Time, never fear. I'm still working hard on Yesterday's Boys.

New Release Coming Soon

I have some exciting news.! I have already told you about my Vella project for Amazon, BUT I know some of you are not ready to try this venture they have going. Sooo, I have decided to publish it as a book when Amazon gives me the go-ahead. There's a thirty-day waiting period after the last episode is published on Vella. I should be able to release it sometime in November. Originally, it was meant to be a stand-alone spin off of The Unforgettables, but I realized that it has a lot more to offer, so it will now be a short novel following Emmy and Clay, and listed as Book 6 of that series, with more to come. If you haven't read The Unforgettables or need a refresher, I suggest you get ready. You really must know the story line of the previous five books to fully enjoy it.

This is a new Gina, but she ties in with the Gina in The Unforgettables. As I began to write it, I fell in love with this mystical and magical person. You won't want to miss out, and it will be a good read while you wait for the next book in A Slip in Time. Here's my updated cover, all ready for Kindle. I'm hoping to do a paperback edition, also. What do you think? Are you up for it? I'll let you now the minute it's released.

You can find The Unforgettables listed on my author page.

I'm still working on this book, and it won't be released until at least Christmas time or later, but if you have not caught up on your reading, now is the time. The end of Book 8 will give a hint of what this cover is all about.

The Golden Crystal by Jane O'Brien

Today I posted the seventeenth episode on my Vella story called The Golden Crystal.  I am learning my way through the whole Vella process, much like some of you.  So far my main complaint is that Amazon is not advertising the Vella platform and most people don't even know it exists.  Other than that, I find it an exciting new way to read and write.

When I first signed on as a reader, I was told that I would be able to read the first three episodes of every series for free.  After that I would have to buy tokens to unlock the episodes one at a time.  But when I completed the first three episodes, I was given 200 free tokens to get me started!  That was a nice bonus.  After using those up, I did purchase 300 tokens.

The tokens are set in relationship to how long each episode is, so if one of my episode is 1500 words long, you would spend 15 tokens to read it.  In the end, it's not much different than buying a Kindle book for $4.99.  The difference is that you have to wait for the next episode to be published unless you are reading a story that has released many episodes already.  Then you can buy all you want that exists.  Make sense?

Overall, it's just plain fun.  If you do want to try this new way of reading, be aware that as of now, you can only read on your iPhone Kindle app or your iPad Kindle app.  These can not be viewed on Kindle itself and are not allowed to be published anywhere else as an ebook or paperback until they are on Vella for a specific amount of time.

I do plan to publish The Golden Crystal as a book at some time in the future.  In the meantime, here's the link to my episodic story.  The Golden Crystal.

Don't forget to hit the THUMBS UP button if you like it.  Once a week, you'll be given the change to FAVE a particular series.  If you like mine, Id appreciate it if you would do that, too.

Thank you for giving my new venture a try.  Let me know what you think.

Yesterday's Mercy Book Release

Book Release!!!
The day has finally arrived (and I even kept to my promise to publish in August!) Yesterday's Mercy is now available. As of this writing the paperback and Kindle edition have not yet merged on Amazon, so I'll give you the Kindle link. I hope you like it. I had some stressful times writing this one, but for the most part it was a lot of fun, and as you will see when you get to the end, it rolls right into the next book, which I have already started writing. Enjoy! And don't forget those all important reviews. Thank you so much for following Jane O'Brien books!

Would You Time Travel?

Good News!! My newest book, Yesterday's Mercy, has moved to the publishing stage, which means I have to wait for the proof copy to arrive before I give final approval. In other words, we're getting there.
I enjoy this time travel genre so much that I sometimes wish I could do it myself. So I'm curious. If you were to time travel, where would you go? Would you visit an ancestor or someone famous? Who and why? I can't wait to see what you have to say.

The Golden Crystal

I don't know how many of you have ventured into the world of Kindle Vella, but remember the first three episodes of every series is FREE.  No membership is required, ever!.  You only have to purchase tokens at very reasonable prices to continue with a story.  The only glitch for now is that these can not be read on your Kindle device even though it has the word Kindle in its name. It must be read on a computer, ipad, or the Kindle app on your iPhone.  Things will change eventually, but this is it so far, because this is a very new program for Amazon.  I'm posting a small piece of Episode 1 of my story called The Golden Crystal which is a spin-off of The Unforgettables series.  Maybe this will tempt you to try the rest while you wait for my next book to be published.

If you want to read more go to: Amazon Kindle Vella.

Episode 1

Decisions

The young woman breathed deeply, taking in the fresh air of the Carpathian Mountains.  She had come to her favorite place in order to clear her head.  Somehow she had gotten herself into a pickle, as her grandmother used to say.  How she missed her Puri Daj, the name the Romani people gave to their grandmothers.  She had learned so much from her.  She wished her grandmother was here now to give her some sage advice, but sadly, she had passed away last summer in the year of 1855, so now Gina was on her own.  The golden crystal ball had been meant for her to bring people together, but somehow she had done just the opposite.  She had created a real mess, because she now had one foot in each world, and she didn’t know which one she preferred.  The truth was she loved them both equally, so it would be so very difficult to make a decision.  How could she let one go for the other?

When she was just a child she had learned of her gifts, and at first she was pleased that she was the chosen one in the troupe, but now she wished she had never heard of her crystal ball.  It would have been better to be like all the others and be satisfied with her life with the Gypsies.

Kindle Vella is Here!

Kindle Vella has been released! And here is my story, The Golden Crystal. It's a spinoff of The Unforgettables where the character named Gina created magical moments with the necklace and bracelet. You can only read Vella on your iPhone or computer. No Androids as yet. And it's only for the US market. The first three episodes are free. After that you buy tokens to continue reading. In the end the tokens would equal the same price as the cost of a kindle book. So far I only have 11 episodes to offer. One episode will be downloaded a week, similar to a TV show. Check it out and leave me a thumbs up if you like it. You can also 'follow' the story and be informed when a new episode is published. It's something new and exciting to explore.

Here's the link to my story:
Scroll down to the episodes and click "see more episodes" if all the episodes aren't showing.
Let me know what you think.

Love Stories

I have been asking couples all of my adult life how they met and fell in love. Maybe it was the writer in me, but their love stories fascinate me. If it's not too private, I would love to hear your story. I'm not collecting them for a book, but just don't be shocked if your story, or a form of it, ends up in a book some day. Haha. Now, Sweep me off my feet like Wade did to Dora and Luke did to Franny.

Spring

My head is spinning. I'm listening to the audio of Yesterday's Woes, Book 4. I'm editing Yesterday's Kin, Book 7. And while others are proofreading book 7, I'm already writing Book 8, which happens to take place in the late fall! I live in my stories, but I don't want to relive fall and winter. Help me out! I need to feel warm.
What are your plans for spring and summer?

Happy Dance

Just like Snoopy, I'm doing a Happy Dance. Yesterday's Hopes has been submitted for an audio book, and the narrator is already working on Yesterday's Dreams.
Yesterday's Hopes should be available in approximately 30 days. That part is difficult to wait for, but as we keep moving through the series, I'll be kept very busy, as I'm still up early every morning to write Yesterday's Kin. I'm getting closer to the end. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel now.

Chinese New Year

It's Chinese New Year, The year of the Ox.
Many of you might not know that I spent the first two years of my marriage in Taiwan. It was such a wonderful way to start out our life together,
There were good times and bad as we adjusted to the new and different culture. But neither one of us would trade those days for anything in the world. I can almost hear the firecrackers going off now. They lasted for days.
A Chinese New Year Greeting might go like this:
May this year bring peace, good health, happiness, prosperity.

Winter and Chocolates

Let's face it.  It hasn't been the best winter of our lives.  Too much is going on in the news and then add COVID thrown in for good measure.  Reading is one way to take yourself to another time and place to forget about it all. If you haven't read the A Slip in Time series, it's a must.  A great distraction.  But if you have read it, why not start all over again? Read Book 1 through Book 6 and get yourself ready for Book 7 coming in the Spring.  At the back of book 6, you'll find a list of characters in case you have forgotten who someone is and how they relate to the families. But please don't look at it if you haven't read through book 5, because you may find you have spoiled a plot line.

So sit back, get some chocolate, whether it's in the form of candy or in a mug of a steaming hot beverage.  Perhaps you'd rather have some wine.  Either way settle in for a fun ride back in time.

Reading books a second time is not your thing, you say.  Then try one of my other series.  Check them all out here.  Jane O'Brien Books

Book Inspiration

Did you ever wonder how I get inspired to write a story? I'll tell you how I thought of Yesterday's Tears. Over twenty years ago I went to an estate sale, and as I often do, I looked for antique quilts and stashes of old fabric. This quilt top is what I found that day. I believe it is from the thirties. The seams are pulling apart in some places so I always thought I would tighten them up someday and then finish the quilt the way it was meant to be. I began to wonder who had made it and I also wondered why she never finished it. Did she get sick and pass away? Did she begin to have trouble with her vision and couldn't see to quilt anymore? Or was she a procrastinator and just never got around to it? No one at the sale knew anything about it, and since it was the only quilt there, I began to think something had happened to prevent her from finishing. The fabric is still pristine. As a matter of fact it feels as though it was ironed and starched. There is a small rust stain along the edge which is what started my thought process about the story, but I never wrote it down until 2019. Now Yesterday's Tears is my best seller. How I wish she had had a moment to write her name on the back. This year my New Year's resolution, (which I never make) is to finish this quilt. I will quilt it by hand the same way she would have done, and with every stitch I will thank her for my inspiration.

Happy New Year!

We did it! We made it to 2021! Happy New Year! Whoo hoo!
All I know is that this year seemed impossible to achieve when I was a little kid. I thought we would all be flying around in space ships like the Jetsons. But things pretty much seem the same as they have for the last few decades.
I have spent this past year reading all of Janet Evanovich Stephanie Plum mysteries. I finally caught up to the newest one, book 27, Fortune and Glory, and am looking forward to it. These books are light-hearted, sometimes to the point of being silly, but they make me laugh while I'm solving a crime. I have never found anything quotable in any of the 26 books I've read before, but in Book 26 I came across something that really said it all for me considering this past year. Once again it's silly, but it's just the way I think. Let me know your thoughts. Evanovich's character Stephanie Plum said: "I found a Fred Astair movie on the old movie channel and watched him dance with Ginger Rogers. Ginger was slim and Fred was slim and instead of talking all the time, sometimes they would sing. And then they would dance for no special reason and they'd be in perfect step without practicing. How cool is this? This is the planet I want to live on."
Me too! May the year 2021 be one where we can all dance perfectly together without practicing!
