It's a New Year

It's almost a new year.  How did that happen?  Weren't we just planning Thanksgiving?

I hear everyone say it.  Time seems to be flying by more quickly than ever before.  They used to say the older you got the faster time seemed to pass, but now everyone, no matter, what age notices it.  Maybe it's because we're busier, or it could be because we're on our electronic devices all the time.  I've noticed how an hour can seem like a few minutes when I'm on the computer.  For me, that usually means I'm living in another world as I type a new story for you.

I don't normally like New Year's resolutions, because they are so difficult to complete.  Last year I decided to learn Spanish, and for the first time in my life I stayed with it.  I've been studying with Babbel since last January.  So if I can do it for one year, I can do it for another.  My resolution is private, but I'll let you know next year if I was able to accomplish it.

Do you have a New Year's resolution ready to go?  Can you share?  I'd love to hear about it, along with your past successes or failures.

This coming year is going to be great.  I can feel it in my bones.  For one thing, a new book is just around the corner.  Happy New Year!

Merry Christmas

Christmas is here! Can you believe it?

Tonight is our Christmas celebration with the family at my house. Most of you will be doing the same things I will be, unless you are going to someone else's house today or tomorrow. This morning begins with a light cleaning up and then getting out the proper bowls and dishes , followed by food prep for tonight. I'm hoping to have time to put my feet up for a few minutes before they arrive -- but I doubt it will happen, although I've been very organized this year so there has not been a lot of stress.
There won't be much writing for the next few days, though, and that's been pulling on me, because I'm almost done with my book. But in a day or two, I'll devote all of my time to finishing it, so it can go to the beta readers.
But today and tomorrow is Jesus's day and He deserves all of my attention, along with my family.
I want to take this time to thank you all for sticking with me through my Facebook upset this year. I am so thankful for my loyal followers. May you all have peace and joy and love throughout the coming year. Merry Christmas!

Reminder

Some of you know that I was seriously hacked on Facebook in July.  I feel awful that I had to discontinue using that page, but I had no choice.  My original page is now controlled by someone else who is using my name and picture and I can't reclaim it or fix it.  They took over my password and created a new one of their own with a two-step verification.  I lost over 1100 followers that day, and worst of all is I know there are some people wondering where I went. They may have stopped reading Jane O'Brien books, because they do not know there have been more published since then.

Since that time I have had to start over again with a new page, so yes, I'm still here, but my new Facebook page is now listed as Jane O'Brien Author. If you are one of those people who have not moved to my new page, I miss you. Plus you're missing out on the fun. I invite you to follow me again, as there will be a Christmas giveaway any day now.  Plus you can see what new exciting books I have written since summer.

Branches of Time, Book 2, Threatening Skye was released in September,, and Book 3, The Book of Jade will be released soon after Christmas. Please continue along with me, as I take Skye all over the world.  Nothing can stop this time-traveling adventurer, but who is chasing her? Who will go along with her?  What about the rest of her family? Will the Red Guard A-watcher, Remington Hart ever catch up to her?  As romantic tension runs high; danger lurks right below the surface.

You can find this new series here:

The Month of December

And here we go! On to the Christmas Season. I normally don't get excited about the month of December itself because I'm so busy with the holidays to take a look at it, other than to say to myself, "Let's get through this cold and pass by winter as quickly as possible." But this month I've decided to appreciate each day as it comes, and enjoy the beauty of the season. What are your thoughts on winter and the month of December?

Can You Hear Me Now?

Did you set your clocks back? How I hate doing that. It makes no sense to me and plays with my head for about a week. But there's one thing I know. I have some exciting news to tell you and clocks have nothing to do with it.

I'm beginning to do Branches of Time on AUDIO! It's a long process as I work with the narrator, I'll be using the same fantastic voice, Belinda Lams. We worked together through the entire series, A Slip in Time. I'm looking forward to seeing, or should I say hearing, how this turns out.
This process usually takes a few months, so if you are an audio listener, please be patient with me. Follow along with me here. I'll be sure to let you know when Skye is ready. And please feel free to share with your audio listening friends.

Readers Favorite Review

How could I forget to tell you? With the launch of my newest book and my vacation travels, I totally forgot to tell you about a Five Star Review I was given by Reader's Favorite for Yesterday's Hopes. I submitted several books months ago and this one was finally chosen for review. I am thrilled with what she had to say about Book #2 in the Slip in Time series. It is a true honor to receive yet another great review from Readers Favorite. Tell me what you think.
Reviewed by Emily-Jane Hills Orford for Readers’ Favorite
Einstein is quoted as saying that “time is relative.” What he meant is that time is dependent on a person’s frame of reference. Thus, if the frame of reference alters, so does one’s perspective on time. That’s what happened to Fran. In Jane O’Brien’s first book in the Slip in Time series, Fran slipped back in time from the twenty-first century to 1875, from her grandmother’s home in Twin Lake in the present to its original cabin over a hundred years earlier. Now, the saga continues in the second book in this series, Yesterday’s Hopes, when Fran’s sister, Dora, is sitting in their grandmother’s house in the twenty-first century, trying to reach into the past to find Fran. She has the old quilt lying on her lap and a message from her sister in the past, but can she jump back in time and reconnect? And, what will she discover in the past? A new love? Or another broken heart? Is the past a good place for Dora, like it is for Fran? Only time will tell.
Jane O’Brien’s historical fiction time travel novel, Yesterday’s Hopes, is a clever take on parallel possibilities in lives set in the present and in the past. This novel continues with Fran’s growing love for Luke but focuses more on Dora’s trek into the past and her meeting with a handsome man who captures her heart. The two women struggle with conflicting connections, both in the past and in the future. The story is about the bond of family, the power of love, and the history of a world that draws two women to make difficult decisions, not on where to live, but on when to live. This is a powerful narrative that, like the first book, will not disappoint. And there’s more to come: the story isn’t over yet.

Writing Ideas

I'm often asked where I get my ideas to write a book. The truth is suggestions are everywhere and I have so many thoughts about what to do next it's difficult to keep myself on track. Soon I will be taking an Amtrak trip across country to visit family. I expect there to be a plethora of beautiful scenery and lots of people watching, so of course I will have a small notebook with me, jotting down every thought that enters my head.
I'm often inspired by real life events such as my first time travel series, A Slip in Time, beginning with Yesterday's Tears. Because I am from a pioneering family in Twin Lake, Michigan (yes, it's a real place) I always wondered what it would be like to go back in time and see how my relatives lived. Years into writing this series, I came across this article and was surprised at how accurately I had hit on certain points. I began to wonder if I was channeling a grandparent. Haha!
Read what Twin Lake was like in the old days.
Sorry, I don't have a date for this article.

Season Changes for Skye

Fall is such a lovely time of year.  This year has been especially nice in Michigan with very little rain fall, nice warm temperatures during the day, and then cooling off at night, which is what turns the trees their gorgeous colors.  We are in the middle of the color change now, and it's fabulous.  But Fall can lull us into a false sense that Spring is just around the corner, when we all know the truth.  I wonder why we are surprised every year when we move into the next season.

This year the Fall season also brought about the release of Threatening Skye, Book 2 in Branches of Time.  I'm so excited with your response to my newest series.  And just like Fall, Rem and Skye go from hot to cold and back to hot again.  How long will Skye run from her pursuer?  And how long will Rem continue to chase her?  And where will her adventures take her next?  Stick around.  There's so much more to come.

Happy Halloween!  Jane O'Brien

It's Almost Here!

Are you getting ready?  Threatening Skye is coming even sooner than you expected.  Perhaps even this week!  Follow along for the big announcement and be the first to read this new adventure.  For now, here's the Amazon Blurb to tease you even more.

When Skye left 1927 to go back to the year 1907, she discovered she was not as happy to be home as she had first thought she would be, because leaving the future meant she had to leave behind a handsome stranger named Remington Hart.  She felt his presence and saw him in her dreams every night, but knowing he was unattainable because he was from another decade, she forced herself to go on with her life.  Chastising herself for always longing for adventure, she convinced herself to be satisfied with where she was at the moment and enjoy the life she had.  To ease her brother's worries for her safety, she promised to put the thrill of time traveling out of her mind.

As she began dating the charismatic Irishman, MacDonald O'Hara, she found she was often comparing him to the man of her dreams.  Even when it became apparent there was no spark between them, she continued to see Mac, while always longing for Rem.  Little did she know, Rem was a time traveler, too, and he had been sent to 1927 to find her and take her back to 2051, which according to the government was her proper time and place.  Rem was working for the State in The Red Guard, and it was his sworn duty to fulfill his assignment and find all absconders.  He had no choice; he was obligated to bring her and her entire family back.

Completely unaware of the threat that is about to descend upon her, her brother, and their parents, Skye Kent Kestler goes about her daily routine as she continues the search for the ancestors on her family tree.  Longing to know about her past, she continues to dig into the mystery of Lilian DeLuca, her three times great-grandmother, a flapper from the nineteen twenties.  Will Skye be able to follow the trail that leads to unanswered questions about her family, or will she be captured before she has a chance?  What other threats lie around the corner for the unaware time-traveler?  Is there something to fear from MacDonald O’Hara, also?

Book Two, Threatening Skye, in the series Branches of Time, is a spin-off of the loved, Amazon bestselling series, A Slip in Time.  Follow along as a new branch of the family emerges, bringing with it new trials and tribulations.

It's a Blue Moon

This month, on Wednesday August 30, 2023, there will be a Blue Moon.  I've always loved that term as  my mother used it often when she would say something only happens 'Once in a Blue Moon.'  And one of my favorite songs is Blue Moon, a melancholy love song..

If you're unfamiliar with the term, it means there will be a second full moon in the same month and as it happens that is only a few days away.  But this moon is special because it is also a Supermoon, meaning it is the closest to the Earth that it has been all year.  So look to the skies on Wednesday for a spectacular view of the moon, and say hello to the 'Old Man' for me.  In the meantime, catch up on your reading of  A Slip in Time and so you can move on to the spin-off,  Branches in Time, because book 2 Threatening Skye is coming soon. I can't wait for you to read it!

If you were one of the lucky ones who happened to fall in love under a Blue Moon, send me your story.  I'd love to read it. Who knows?  It might make it into one of my books!

Don't forget to follow this blog so you can keep up with my news and giveaways.

Day Trips for Research

One of the best parts of writing books about my home state is doing research. My husband and I took a three-day trip around The Traverse City area, then north and back down to Ludington. We had been to many of the small towns before but it has been years. I was shocked to see how much building up had occurred. Those sleepy towns are now filled with big gorgeous houses on bluffs which overlook the Grand Traverse Bay (both arms) and Lake Michigan. Most of our trip was wet as it rained off and on throughout the entire time. It was often difficult to drive with the windshield wipers constantly going back and forth. But we were not daunted one bit; we continued on until we found quaint out of the way places to eat. We stopped to walk in the downtown shopping districts, between raindrops, admiring the local artisans' work. I have to say I was quite restrained as I wanted to buy everything I saw. And of course we had to buy fudge, because how can you ever go Up North, as we say here, without buying fudge?

One of the best lunches we had was in downtown Frankfort at a place called L'Chayim Delicatessen. I had the best Pita filled sandwich I ever had in my life there. In Harbor Springs we stumbled across a cute little Mexican restaurant off the beaten path called Rodrigo's, probably known only to the locals. It was very small and busy but the food was great!
And how could we leave the area without some wine tasting? Besides it was a great escape from the rain. We stopped at Brys Estate Vineyard & Winery on Old Mission Peninsula in Traverse City and had a glass of wine high up on the deck which overlooked their acres of grapes. Such a beautiful spot, and the wine was fabulous.
Overall, I picked up some great ideas for the next book or two which was the whole point in going and also to heal from my grief of losing my beloved dog, Teddy. I can't wait to get started on the next book the minute Threatening Skye is published. So far early reviews are great! I'm thrilled as this one was not easy to write. It's coming to you very soon now. I'll make a big announcement here the moment it hits the stands! So stick around.

YES!!

Why YES?  Because I finished Threatening Skye, re-read it myself, and it is now in the hands of my alpha reader.  And so far he LOVES it, and believe me, he can be tough.

While he is reading, I am tweaking some things plus adding the dedication and updating the character list, which I always place at the back of the book so as not to give anything away. This list is helpful to my readers, as the names of people in my stories are continuous from previous books and so it can get quite lengthy. It also helps me, as I have to refer to it to make sure I keep my people in the right decade and year.  Time travel is quite tricky.

So it won't be long now.  It still has to make it through the beta reader test, and then it's on to publication.   I can't wait for you to read the newest installment of Branches of Time.

Almost Done

Once I am done writing this post, I will begin to write the last words on my newest book.  I am always a little nervous to write the ending.  Will it be good enough?  Will the book hold your interest?  And worst of all will I miss the people I just spent months inventing?  In this case this is a series so the next book will bring them back to me in full force, which is why I write a lot of series.  I hate to lose my people. I actually go into a mourning period after my book is done.

So if I'm successful, and I am able to write a conclusion I'm satisfied with, the editing process and proofreading will begin soon.  Crossing fingers. Here's hoping for a September publication for Threatening Skye!

Turning Point

I've been at a crossroads with my newest book, Threatening Skye, but yesterday, I came to a turning point.  What a good feeling that is.  I'm finally sure of where my story is going, and I'm excited to write it down, so here I am at 4:00 a.m. trying to get the thoughts out of my head and onto the manuscript.  I hope it's as good as I think it is!  Book Two of Branches of Time should be coming your way early this fall.  Keep up with me here, or follow my new Facebook page.  Be sure to follow the one with a profile picture of me in front of a patriotic quilt.

Research

One of my favorite things to do before, and while I'm writing, is research. I can't imagine what it was like for authors before the Internet.  With a touch of a few keys, I can be in another world of fashion and design.  I can then describe my character's surroundings, clothing, and sense of style. I use what I see to project myself into another world, so when I write I feel as though I am actually there.

I often get asked, 'where can I see that house?'  'What city were you writing about?' 'Where are those little shops?'  Most of which are in my imagination, but not without help from visual aids such as clothing patterns and song lyrics.  I also love reading old letters as they give me a peek into another person's private life.  I have used several of my father's letters from WWII and some of my great-grandparents' love letters and musings about daily life.  I guess I'm a true time-traveler at heart.

Follow Me Here

If you've been following along with the saga of my hacking fiasco, I can only tell you that nothing has changed.  I tried to set up a new Facebook page, and it was disabled before I even got a start because the hacker grabbed that one, too.  I am done with Facebook.  This is when the age of computers is frustrating.  Facebook has no number where you can call and talk to a human, and I can't log in in order to voice my complaint because according to them I don;t exist anymore.

I won't let them get me down, SOOOO the only other option is to move on.
You may continue to follow me here on my blog at www.authorjaneobrien.com. or on my Goodreads page for Jane O'Brien.  (Please note: there are two other Jane O'Brien's publishing, so be sure to follow the correct one.)
You can also find me on Instagram.  I plan to be more active there.
I'm also on Twitter.
And soon I'll be on the brand new Threads, but I have a few things to do first before I'm ready to post.

Until I hear from you, I'll be writing Threatening Skye, Book 2 of Branches of Time.  Thanks for hanging on.  I'm so glad you're sticking around.

I've Been Hacked

Yesterday may have been one of the worst days of my life.  My Facebook was hacked.  And when I say hacked, I mean they wiped out my personal account and my author account and took over by creating a new one.  I have lost nine years of work on my author page.  Someone out there in another country has full control of my author page.  If you are a follower of Jane O'Brien on Facebook, I recommend you block me.  Believe me, it's not me.

I recently thought I was hacked on a small scale, because my friends were getting messages to follow them when they already had.  You've all seen those.  So I quickly changed my password on both accounts and my profile picture, so I could identify which page was really mine.  My author page had a book cover of my newest book, Skye.  It's red so you can't miss it.  They only one you can see now, still has my face in the profile circle.  I had over 1100 followers and this one has 737.

They deleted both of my email names from Facebook's records and even my phone number.  Then they installed a two-step verification of their own.  I can see the name of the person who is using my account to mine followers names.  There's no way I can get in, and Facebook is unreachable.  I'm very disappointed in them and wonder if I should continue on.

I immediately froze my banks accounts just in case they had access, but I don't think so.  I've been working on this for two days, and decided it's fruitless.  Nine years of work just went down the tubes.

I will rebuild, but it will take time.  So in a week or so, I will try to start a new Facebook page, and I will try to reach as many of you as possible.  I have a newsletter list and a list of people who have won contests and giveaways over the years, so that might help.  And I will plead with family and friends to share my new page.  In the meantime, protect yourself and block my page as it stands now.  Do not engage with them.  These are despicable people.  I don't understand why Facebook doesn't have a call number so you can speak to a human, but I suppose they would be overwhelmed, because according to my banker, she sees this many times a week.  They are far more sophisticated than they used to be.

Thank you for listening.  I pray this never happens to you.  I took many precautions, but I believe it may have happened when I downloaded a particular app on my phone, which I'm afraid to name here, because they might after me again.

Stay cyber safe.  But when they want to get in, they can and will.

Skye is a work of fiction in the time travel, adventure, romantic drama, and historical fiction subgenres. It is best suited to the general adult reading audience and was penned by author Jane O'Brien. In this conceptual work that leans more into its historical side than the science fiction aspects, we are introduced to fish-out-of-water Skye in 1907. It soon becomes obvious that Skye doesn’t really belong in her time, and it transpires that Remington Hart, a man from 2051, is looking to find Skye and return her to the future time that she has fled from. But when he meets the time-traveling beauty and sees how simple life could be in her world, Remington’s resolve begins to soften.

Author Jane O'Brien has crafted a beautiful love story with an interesting central dynamic that sets Skye and Remington at odds with each other, but it’s clear to see the burgeoning romantic chemistry the more they clash. One of the features I really enjoyed most about this work was the author’s commitment to character development, as every moment is well-defined with smooth dialogue and the kind of narration that makes you feel like you’re right on Skye’s shoulder with every decision, every heartache and every rush of emotion. The time travel concept is efficient for the plot and makes for some really interesting twists as we get closer to the novel’s exciting conclusion. The other references to futuristic living and The Red Guard are well-placed to give a more solid background to Remington’s character and mission. Overall, Skye is a well-told story with much to offer fans of historical and romantic dramas with a light sci-fi twist.

Skye is Available

My exciting new novel, Skye, has been released.  It is now ready for you through paperback, Kindle, or Kindle Unlimited.

If you have not been following previous posts, this new series is called Branches of Time, and is a spin-off of A Slip in Time.  Here is the book description to tempt you.

Skye is a twenty-year-old, dark-haired beauty who is bored to death with her life in 1907.  She has always been a free spirit and challenger of what was expected of her.  While growing up, she was difficult for her parents to control, because she tended to defy all the rules of etiquette for a young woman of her time.  It was not surprising to her brother, Cade, when Skye asked if she could live with him in the city.  She declared she would die if she had to stay another day in the country where nothing ever happened.

Once Skye was away from her parents, Daniel and Virginia Kestler, she began to question who she was and where she had come from.  It soon became clear that something was amiss.  After much probing, she discovered she was a child of time travel and she was not from the century she was living in.  She had actually been born in another year in the future, 2031, and Kestler was not even her last name.  What were her parents hiding from her?  Why had she never been told her real name and birth date?  How would this new knowledge affect her going forward?  And who was the persistent man who was pursuing her through time, from 1907 to 1957 to 1927 and back to 1907 again?

The handsome Remington Hart, a member of The Red Guard, lives in the twenty-first century in the year 2051.  His job is to find all of those who have fled the oppressive government and bring them back to where they belong.  When he realizes it is possible to time travel and one entire family has been living in the nineteenth century, he makes it his quest to find Skye Kent Kestler and return her to her proper place.  But will his judgement be colored when he meets the beautiful Skye?  Will his goals and views of life be changed once he sees what life can be like in a slower, more peaceful time?  Will love pull at his heart and convince him to give up everything he was taught in order to stay with Skye, or will he be pulled into the job he first began?

These two time-travel lovers began with determination on Rem's part to fulfill his duties, and fear on Skye's part of what this strange man in her life wants of her, but a burning desire to be together will change everything.  Only time will tell if the man who was sent to do a job will disrupt a young woman's life by forcing her to go back with him to a life she knows nothing about.

Hot Romance

I try not to be listed simply as a romance author, although there is plenty of it in my books.  But I also like history, fantasy, and intrigue.  You can find all of these in the A Slip in Time series, but did you know how much history and fantasy combined there is in The Unforgettables?  And it's chock full of magic, too.  Start with Ruby and Sal and follow a family you won't soon forget.  They're truly Unforgettable.

Would you love to wear the magical Ruby and Diamond Necklace?

Cover Reveal

Yes!  I'm working on my new series, and it's been so much fun.  I can't wait to bring it to you.  I'm hoping for a May release but since I haven't finished writing it yet, it's a wait-and-see date.  So here's a little hint.  If you've read A Slip in Time, Yesterday's Memories, then the title says it all.

Love Stories

I love hearing about how people met and their love stories. In fact, it's often one of the first things I ask when I meet a new couple. Most people, if they're still in love, like to share their story. A few have actually been used in my books, or a version of them, but I'll never tell.

Let me tell you a little bit about my love story. I first met my husband when I was 11 and he was 12. My heart skipped a beat or two, and I think my palms began to sweat. I looked forward to seeing him after that. But soon we went our separate ways. We met again when I was 15. I was his best friend's girlfriend, so he was often at our group parties and hung out with us. I just knew somehow that he was meant to be mine The next day after a birthday party for my friend, I told my mother that I was going to break up with my boyfriend and marry him someday. It wasn't easy over the next several years. On and off as teenagers do, but in our senior year we knew we were in love and married the year after graduation while he was in the Navy. And we're still friends with his friend and my ex.

Would you like to share your love story with me and the other followers who read this post? We can't wait to hear all about it.

Yesterday's Memories is Here!

Yesterday's Memories is ready for you to enjoy. And it's already #1 in New Releases in Historical Fiction as well as #35 in Time Travel Romance.  I'm so excited for you to read this final book in the A Slip in Time series.

Here is one of the wonderful reviews it has already received.

Yesterday’s Memories

The “Slip in Time” series by Jane O’Brien seems to be ending. And by “seems to be ending”, I mean
“Are you sure you really have to end this beloved series, Author O’Brien?”

*sigh* Ok, I will review “Yesterday’s Memories” Book 12 as if it’s the finale in the series, but I’m crossing my fingers…

“Yesterday’s Memories” ties up the events of this bestselling series in a lovely and loving way. As readers of the series know, a family quilt has enabled certain members of the Clark family to travel from the present time (or from even more in the future), to the Michigan of the 1800’s. So, it is fitting that this book is written as a “word quilt”. Every chapter features different members of the family, so that by the end of the book, we have pieced together the stories of most of the family. What a special way to sum up each character and leave us satisfied that all is well.

If you’ve read past the of end each book to the supplementary material, you know that the Author lists all of the characters- which are in the hundreds by this time. And we get to say “Farewell” to many of them. Part of the book focuses on lovers Jay and Sadie. Their story is a moving and heart-rending one. Dora and Wade and Franny and Luke are the main characters of the series, and this book finds them making a big decision.

Yesterday’s Memories is stitched with the same warm humor, compelling romance, and history that we have loved in all the books. Reading “Yesterday’s Memories” is like leafing through a well-loved photo album and enjoying the big events and small moments that make life beautiful.

Time slip travel is fascinating. Many thanks to Jane O’Brien for giving us 12 rich and wonderful books. I highly recommend Yesterday’s Memories (And even if this series is truly over, I’ve overheard that a new series is coming.)

Many thanks to Author Jane O’Brien who graciously shared an advance review copy with me. This is my honest review.
